Although we work with many types and stock some fabrics, most of those come from our customers. They choose what they want the design to look like and we help from there. Some fabrics are easier to work with (or even MUCH easier to work with) than others, and the time spent in smoothing and straightening fabrics for an easy cut can matter when it comes to cost. We are happy to advise on types and thicknesses of fabrics during the design phase. We also design the tools to maximize the usage of the materials.

Cork

Cork is an excellent gasket material due to it’s near impermeability and elasticity. Cork is also used in footwear, sporting goods and for wine bottle stoppers.

Felt

Felt is the oldest known textile. Felt can hold lots of water without feeling wet, is fire resistant, and is an excellent sound and vibration dampener. Felt can be natural wool, synthetic polyester, or a blend. Felt is commonly used for recreation/apparel, gaskets and furniture.

Films

Films can be made of many different plastic and natural formulations such as polyethylene and cellulose and produced several different ways, including casting and coextruding.

  • HDPE- Stiffer than low density PE, HDPE is less transparent and more robust.
  • TPU- Plasticizer free, TPU’s are easier to bond to, and often used in food grade applications.
  • Polyimide- For harsh environments where longevity and durability are required.
  • Teflon- Food safe and very good for electrical (high dielectric strength) and high heat applications.

Plastic Sheet

Thicker than films, and more rigid, we cut parts out of dozens of types of sheet.

  • Polycarbonate (Lexan)-  Polycarbonates are rigid, high-impact plastic sheets that are used in electronics, recreational goods, cases, and construction.
  •  Polyester (Mylar)- Structurally firm, PE sheet is used in electronics, medical devices, PPE, and specialty packaging.
  •  ABS- Safe, rugged plastic that doesn't easily scratch.  However, ABS is primarily an indoor material.
  •  Nylon (Nylatron)- There are several versions of this plastic. Some are food grade, most are very strong.
  •  PTFE Glass Fabric- Fiberglass welded with PTFE, this material has a wide heat range, is very durable and is used for apparel manufacturing, electronics, gasketing, conveyor belts and petroleum processing.

Tapes

Acrylic- Versatile adhesive with a good temperature range that sticks to most surfaces.

Rubber- Quickest tack adhesive.  Poor heat range and not as flexible as acrylics.

Low tack- Removable, repositionable and variable adhesives are used in many applications that require temporary adhesion without leaving residue or damaging substrates.

Conductives- Tapes that are thermally or electrically conductive for electronics, energy and transportation.

Bumpon- 3M Urethane product that is used in many electronic applications for cushioning and abrasion resistance.

Will Rubber Resource help me figure out the best materials for my application?

Yes! That is one of things we do. We can help narrow down options, or provide direction. Then, we can look at samples and see how each would act on press. Then we can make solid recommendations on what materials would work the best for each given application and your goals as the customer.

Why does it matter what materials I select? Can’t you just cut them?

Different materials react in different ways on press... and differently on different types of machinery. Also, some materials that seem similar can have drastically different price points. If possible, we like to be involved in material selection early in the engineering process.
